Tolpuddle is a small village and civil parish in Dorset, situated on the River Piddle, from which its name is derived (meaning Tola’s River Piddle farm/settlement), about 8 miles east of Dorchester, the county town. The village is globally famous as the home of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, six agricultural labourers who were arrested and transported to Australia in 1834 for forming a friendly society (an early form of a trade union) to protest wage cuts, a pivotal event in the history of the trade union movement. The village stands between altitudes of 140 ft in the valley bottom and 380 ft on the northern boundary, with the land being predominantly chalk, except for small patches of Reading Beds, and the River Piddle has been historically managed with water meadows created in the 1630s for sheep farming. A prominent local landmark is the ancient Martyrs’ Tree, a sycamore on the village green under which the six men are said to have met and sworn their oath; the tree is now cared for by the National Trust. The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist is the oldest building in the village, dating from the 13th century, though believed to be on the site of a much earlier church, featuring a 12th-century grave slab.
