Wynford Eagle is a very small, secluded parish and hamlet nestled in the rolling chalk downlands of West Dorset, situated approximately six miles northwest of Dorchester, a position that places it within a deep valley setting with high hills rising steeply on all sides, contributing to its quiet and somewhat ‘lost’ character. The name is ancient and compound: ‘Wynford’ is of Celtic origin, translating to ‘white’ or ‘bright stream’ (Wïnn-frud), referring to the small chalk stream that drains the valley northward to the River Frome, while ‘Eagle’ is a manorial affix from the 13th-century L’Aigle family (de Aquila), whose emblem—a stone eagle—is famously mounted on the gable of the historic Manor House.
